As health insurance costs continue to climb at 2-3 times the rate of inflation, more and more employers are turning to wellness programs to help rein in their costs. Our clients are looking at offering more on site preventive screenings such as cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density and skin cancer screenings. In addition on site walking programs and fitness challenges are becoming more and more popular. A recent Duke University study reinforces the the need for employee wellness programs, pointing out the high cost of overweight employeers and increased worker compensation costs for both sedentary and overweight employees.
Companies need to go beyond the health fairs and screenings and include annual health risk assessments and ongoing programs to really succeed in their mission to create a healthier workforce. Regular commitment from the top, financial incentives and a variety of programs work best.
